With the right care and support, even the most hopeless drug addiction treatment can turn things around. For most individuals struggling with substance abuse, the hardest step toward sobriety is the first one: realizing that you need help and choosing to make a difference. It is natural to feel unsure about whether you have what it takes to quit, or whether you are just too weak to begin recovery. But there is no reason for concern; any drug addiction treatment will show you that you can recover. As an addict, you already know this.

During treatment, your primary care physician will evaluate your condition and determine whether you are a good candidate for medication treatment. If you are, your medical care team will provide you with the necessary medications to keep you going during the recovery process. Doctors will also ask you questions to help them figure out the cause of your addiction; whether it was due to your environment, genetics, substance abuse, depression, or another underlying disorder. Once the primary doctor has determined the cause of your dependency, your consultation schedule will be scheduled as well. During your consultation, a psychologist will likely be assigned to you; this person will likely be your primary care physician as well as anyone on the treatment team, including your psychiatrist. During this time, he or she will ask you about your medications, your history of substance abuse, and any thoughts or fears you have.

Once all the information gathered during your initial consultation is analyzed, your medical history will be reviewed as well to find out if any other conditions may be causing your symptoms or addiction. If there is no other medical condition causing your symptoms, your substance abuse and/or dependence will be further evaluated. Your treatment team will likely put together a treatment plan including family therapy, group therapy, and either individual or group therapy. The goal of treatment is to help you lead a life free from the harmful effects of your addiction; this goal can be reached by using various methods of treatment, and your medical history is just one piece of the puzzle that helps to lead you to that goal.
