Information about Drug Rehabs in Rome, Georgia

The State of Georgia is one of the first in the U.S. to implement a comprehensive drug rehabilitation system. In Atlanta Georgia, there are seven different drug rehabs and centers for drug treatment that provide an array of services including detoxification and residential rehab. The treatment centers are based in Atlanta, Augusta, Columbus, Marietta, Macon, and Roswell.

“Methadone is an opiate pain reliever that has helped people who are addicted to opiates kick their habit,” said Dr. Edward Cappuccio, medical director of the Addiction Treatment Centers for Georgia. “For many years, Methadone was used effectively to manage pain for chronic patients suffering from narcotic use disorders. Now, methadone maintenance therapy can also help patients with substance dependence.

“For most patients Methadone is a safe medication that produces satisfactory results. But it does have some undesirable side effects, such as nausea, constipation, insomnia, headaches, vomiting, and seizures.” For patients who have had a prior history of drug abuse, the risk of side effects may be greater than others.

“There is not a specific list of criteria that is used to screen out drug rehabs from being legitimate,” says Dr. David Alexander, professor of medicine at New York Medical College and president of the American Society of Addiction Medicine. “The center should be licensed by the state. It should have a qualified staff and an onsite toxicology lab to test for drug contamination. The center should have a solid 24 hour hotline for emergencies.

“Rehabilitation centers may not offer the same degree of personalized care that a residential treatment facility might. They may not be able to follow up with the patient on a regular basis. Many centers will require the patient to pay the costs of their medical care and supplies themselves. In addition, they may not be able to meet the patient’s needs during times when their loved ones may need them the most.

For most people, long term drug addiction issues are not serious enough to warrant jail time. There may be underlying medical issues that were not detected during the initial screening that could cause relapse. Family members are very supportive and eager to do whatever it takes to help their loved one get through this difficult time. They may have been victims themselves of addiction but are now willing to help take steps to help those who are struggling. If the family members of drug abusers continue to feel guilty, depressed or guilty about their past, it may prevent them from helping.

“Rehabilitation centers are an effective way to help those who may need to move on with their lives,” says Dr. Cappuccio. “The drug rehab helps to create a new lifestyle for each person who chooses to return to an active and productive life and become a productive member of society.

A professional staff will ensure the safety of the residents of the rehab and help to make them comfortable and feel at home in their environment. In some cases, the staff may even be involved in educating the patients on ways to reduce substance abuse.

Drug rehab centers may also provide an opportunity to take a course that focuses on how to handle a loved one who may be struggling with substance abuse. This course can include information about how to cope when faced with an addict and how to develop a good relationship with others in the rehab.

The staff is there to help the family members cope with these challenging times. The staff also helps to keep the loved one motivated and on the right path to recovery.
