The mission of Emde Joyce is “to offer innovative, high-quality and comprehensive drug rehabilitation and alcohol addiction treatment services.” The Emde Joyce program was named after the late Dr. Emdean Joyce, who lived and died in Englewood Colorado. Dr. Joyce was a renowned physician who specialized in treating alcoholics and addicts. According to his obituary, he was a resident of Englewood Colorado for twenty-eight years and practiced as a family physician for several more years. He is also credited with being the personal physician of the actor Johnny Utah. Dr. Joyce’s career spanned nearly thirty years and he served as medical officer for the U.S. military in Vietnam.
The Emde Joyce program was created to address the unique needs and issues facing substance abuse and addiction. In their state of Colorado, the requirement that persons suffering from drug addiction receive community or residential treatment has been considered inadequate and sometimes non-existent. The program offers its residents a 12 step program and the individual is assessed on their drug dependency and addiction to other substances. This assessment process provides vital information on the strengths and weaknesses of the patient’s addiction to alcohol or other drugs. Based on this information, the treatment plan is devised to best meet the needs of the patient.
The Emde Joyce program incorporates many elements of traditional substance abuse treatment. Rehabilitation professionals use twelve step programs, education, social activities, support systems, and career counseling to help individuals work through their addiction and learn how to lead a productive life sober. Through the program, patients are offered the tools they need to deal with stressors in their lives and gain a sense of self-worth and self-empowerment.
