The first of the five general perspectives on Drug Rehabilitation Day was presented by Dr. James Parkinson, director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services branch of the Arkansas Department of corrections. His presentation was entitled “Perspectives on Drug Rehabilitation Day.” This was the first presentation on Drug Rehabilitation Day to feature a wide variety of people from all walks of life including faith-based, government, personal, and educational institutions. Dr. Parkinson began his remarks by acknowledging that the purpose of the event was to bring people together to celebrate the successes of rehabilitation programs and to recognize those who have overcome drug addiction and its related conditions. With this purpose in mind, he went on to outline the many different perspectives represented here.

The second of the five general perspectives on Drug Rehabilitation Day was given by Betty Burch Stiner, former president of the American Psychological Association. She opened her remarks by sharing some personal experiences that she had experienced while trying to overcome substance abuse. She went on to state that people who suffer from substance abuse may exhibit mood swings and behavioral patterns that are outside their normal range. They may also experience episodes of anxiety and depression. As a former addict and now a psychologist, Betty Burch felt that it was important for everyone present at the conference to be able to identify with these symptoms. The goal was to provide tools that would be able to address the different symptoms and help those who are in danger of developing into a substance abuser.

The final of the five general perspectives on Drug Rehabilitation Day was delivered by Frank Volk, former director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services branch of the Arkansas Department of corrections. Frank talked about the importance of family involvement when discussing Drug Rehab. Family members must be supportive and dedicated to helping the recovering addict get on with his life. Frank also stressed the need to offer the recovering addict a sense of purpose. Without that purpose, relapse is very likely. Drug Rehab in Fort Smith Arkansas will no doubt continue to progress in this direction.
